HIV and AIDS |
Many AIDS patients lack EFs. Furthermore, it appears that the AIDS virus alters fatty acid metabolism and deprives some parts of the body of essential fats. For example, AIDS causes malabsorption and losses of EFAs from the intestine.
A surgeon I know treats AIDS patients with intravenous infusions of EFAs. The reason for using intravenous fats is that severely ill AIDS patients have difficulties absorbing fats. He has found that the patients' immune systems improved and their diseases stopped progressing. This work provides a scientific basis for the observation that diets low in fat and high in EFs help some patients with AIDS, and improve the immune system.
Several studies have shown that patients with AIDS often have EFA deficiencies. A proper balance of EFAs is essential for the immune system to work. When the balance is upset, the body cannot fight infection. I suggest that every patient with AIDS get the fatty acid profile EFA-SRä, and correct any EFA abnormalities with oral or intravenous oil supplements.
Because of the different ways that AIDS manifests, it is impossible to provide one diet for everybody. AIDS imposes huge metabolic stress upon the body. The combination of weight loss, special supplements high in calories but poor in EFs, metabolic stress, cell death, drugs, and other factors dramatically alter fat composition. Because of these factors, AIDS patients may experience dramatic changes in lipid values and body fat distribution. They may also have dermatitis and hair loss, a consequence of drugs, metabolic stress and EFA abnormalities.
