The common profiles are done in plasma or red cells. One includes the major fatty acids without trans; the other adds trans fatty acids.
We can also analyze adipose tissue, cells in culture, animals, plants, foods, etc.
The "Fatty Acid Status Report (EFA-SRÔ)"
consists of fatty acids used to assess the health status of a patient. The set
includes the major fatty acids: saturated, monounsaturated (w7 and w9),
the EFAs (linoleic and linolenic), and EFA derivatives (including 20:5w3
(EPA), 22:5w3 and 22:6w3 (DHA)), indicators of EFAD. The profile
may change to incorporate suggestions from physicians or the results of our
research and chemical identification or specific clinical requests. Use this
test for follow-up purposes unless you need to monitor trans fatty acids
(TFAs).
The "Fatty Acid Status Report (EFA-SRÔ)" + trans includes all the peaks
measured in the Fatty Acid Status Profile, as well a few trans fatty
acids.
For most patients, plasma fatty acids with or without trans are the
initial profile.
We are preparing other profiles with fewer and more fatty acids. We can measure very long change fatty acids, odd carbon length, markers of PUFA status.
Some fatty acids may be indicative of EFA deficiency/insufficiency. There are numerous peaks yet to be identified but which may be associated with health status or disease.
We can prepare a report on each subject, or tables of all subjects for statistical analyses. Formats include Excel, Lotus, ASCII and several others. We have advanced statistical programs such as SPSS, Statistica for Windows, and most of the major graphics programs in the market. We can prepare summary statistics, graphs, and multivariate analyses.
An experienced physician is available to review the data and prepare an interpretative report for each subject.
For clinical purposes we offer similar assays and third party billing. Special rates are negotiable with institutions based on volume and other factors.
We welcome suggestions for other profiles that may interest physicians or researchers.
Clinical samples are priced on an individual basis after consultation with your doctor. Depending on the complexity of your case, it will usually cost $395-$1200 per sample. Patient reports and interpretative diagnosis are also available. Contact us for more info.
The cost per sample depends on the number of samples, number of peaks to be measured, degree of accuracy desired for each peak, turn around time needed, and whether or not we are collaborators and co-authors in the research or merely provide technical service.
Research samples are currently offered at $195 per sample. Please understand that these samples are not to be used for diagnosis or treatment and do not constitute medical advice. Other restrictions apply.
Many people have asked whether they can volunteer to have their blood analyzed for fatty acid composition. They also want to donate money to help with our research.
Some people want to know their test results, but do not have a health problem that makes them eligible for health insurance to cover the costs. (As a general rule, most insurance companies pay for all or a significant portion of a fatty acid profile if ordered for the diagnosis and treatment of a medical condition.)
We plan to offer, on a pilot basis, a program to help people help us. We are offering research analyses on blood or foods for $195 per sample. You help us do research and may benefit from knowing your test results.
This amount does not cover all our costs, and we therefore must enforce strict requirements for acceptance. To participate in a study we are doing to evaluate patterns of fatty acids across the world, you must comply with the following requirements:
NOTE: Please contact us before sending a
check or blood sample. We need to know that you will be sending a sample.
You must send two or more samples at the same
time (to reduce processing costs). You must arrange with someone to draw the
blood and send the specimen. (Most laboratories can do this for a small fee;
instructions will be sent upon request.) Send at least 2 samples (one person
plasma + RBCs, two plasma samples from 2 people, etc.). Follow instructions in
our how to order section, requesting Dr. Siguel's
fatty acid analysis EFA-SRÔ.
You must complete a requisition
form. This form has 2 pages. The forms are in PDF (Adobe) format. You can print
them in your printer. Send p.1 and p.2 to EssentialFats LLC with your check.
Send a copy of p.1 with your blood samples.
This information on this form may be used for reporting the data in research
and publications. However, your name will be kept confidential. If you wish,
you can write only a CODE NAME in the information form, and, in a separate
letter with your check sent to EssentialFats LLC, state what CODE it applies to
and the address and name where test results are to be sent.
You must include a check for the number of
samples sent, payable in U.S. dollars. Send the check to EssentialFats LLC, PO
Box 10187 Dept N, Gaithersburg, MD 20898.
It will take more than one month to analyze
your sample. (This is a very complex test that normally requires more than 2
weeks for results.)
The blood or food will be analyzed in a
manner similar to other specimens, but we may not comply with any
federal or state regulations pertaining to the analysis of patient or other
samples.
We will provide no medical care, and assume
no medical liability. Your sample will not be treated as a patient sample. We
cannot provide any medical recommendations or answer any questions pertaining
to your test results.
We are not providing a test in a laboratory
approved for providing medical tests (otherwise we need to comply with a wide
range of regulations that drastically increase our costs). We assume no
liability for incorrect results, medical problems, consequences of the test
results, or any other issues related to the blood test. You agree that we can
keep the blood and do anything we want with it, including reporting test
results (without your name).
You must arrange for all medical aspects of
your diagnosis, treatment, etc. You will need help from a doctor or laboratory
to have the blood drawn, separated into plasma and red cells, split into
several tubes, frozen, and shipped next-day delivery by Federal Express. See how to order. Practically every lab knows how to send
blood by mail.
We will confirm that we received the sample.
We will send you the test results. If you have any questions, you may read
scientific publications or Siguel's book.
Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to answer questions about research
samples.
We strongly request that you provide us with
results of other tests and a summary of your clinical condition. If you start
eating foods rich in PUFAs, we would like you to repeat the test to see the
effect on your lipids, health condition, etc. The test results we would like to
have include a lipid profile, CBC, reticulocyte count, chemistry profile,
height, weight, age, sex, eye color and other information available in our
subject or patient requisition form. This information is easy to complete.
If you have insurance, we suggest you order the test as part of your medical diagnosis and treatment. In that case, you may be able to obtain reimbursement.
For specimen issues and technical questions: contact us. You will receive instructions and forms for blood testing, and brochures on EFAs.
