Fish oil sources

Fish oils are either extracted directly from fish for the primary purpose of producing high quality fish oil, or they are a surplus item from the production of fish meal (often for animal feed). Many companies claim to make fish oil. Companies may extract oils directly from fish, or purify and clean fish oil they purchase from various sources. Dr Siguel found more than 10 companies who claim to manufacture fish oils. The time between the date the fish was caught to the date the oil was extracted and/or encapsulated may be weeks, months, or perhaps years. At scientific meetings and trade shows attended by leading worldwide producers (from Japan, Norway, Russia, Canada, etc.), Dr Siguel was unable to obtain firm dates.

Very large companies may sell fish oil in 55 gallon containers. Smaller companies purchase in 55 gallon tanks and encapsulate the oil. Our research suggests at least 10 companies in the US and Canada purchase fish oil and encapsulate oil. Many more, perhaps hundreds, sell encapsulated fish oil under their own private labels, when the fish oil is produced by one of the other companies who actually encapsulate the oil.

We will post information on oil manufacturers, encapsulators, web sites, etc. based on the information companies provide us.

Many of the companies that sell encapsulated vegetable oils also sell fish oil capsules.
