A major fatty acid professional association has issued recommendations for
dietary intake of essential fats. Check the link to ISSFAL at our organization
links. We present this information for educational purposes. We do not endorse
these recommendations.
Watch for Dr. Siguel's upcoming letter to the editor on the prevention of Crohn's disease (for families with one member with Crohn's disease) in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Also see IBD, inflammatory bowel disease. New treatment for severe Crohn's disease approved by the FDA reported in The NYT and the WSJ. Dr. Siguel considers the new treatment dangerous for most people-- other, likely better, alternatives exist. Treatment suggested only for the few patients with active fistulas that do not respond to TPN, antibiotics (in accordance with FDA guidelines).
My pregnancy. The weekly diary of a pregnant woman.
Every month we update test results and discuss her nutrition. You can see the
effects of her diet changes on her fat composition with sequential fatty acid
profiles. We explain the need for and use of PUFA-rich supplements such as flax
seeds, fish oils, and "brain" supplements (EPA, DHA) for pregnant and
lactating women. We explain our approaches to monitoring and treating lipid
abnormalities during pregnancy.
Dr. Siguel published the first study of a pregnant woman with abnormal fatty
acids treated at a major medical center in Boston using frequent fatty acid
profiles. (Siguel EN, Blumberg JB, Caesar J. Monitoring the Optimal Infusion of
Intravenous Lipids: Detection of Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency. Archives
of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. 110: 792-797, 1986.) The study showed
that patients fed soybean oil intravenously can do well.
A new section in frequently asked questions to answer common questions we receive on what blood tests to order, how to interpret blood tests, differences among fatty acid blood tests, and related questions.
Lipids (lipid diagnosis and treatment), lipids and drug therapy. New section comparing the effects of drugs available to treat lipid abnormalities. The current tables are drafts for review and discussion. We are looking for comments from drug manufacturers and researchers. We plan to have further suggestions for use, side effects, etc. This site relies on information combined and simplified from many sources and further input from drug manufacturers. Use this information as a starting point and verify it with a doctor or drug manufacturer.
Updates on diseases: new approaches, new disorders discussed. Epilepsy. Ketogenic diets likely cause deficiencies of essential fats. Options to diagnose and treat using the fatty acid profile EFA-SRŌ. This treatment requires supervision by physicians with extensive expertise in epilepsy and diagnosing PUFA abnormalities.
ASPEN course on PUFAs, San Diego, CA, Jan 31, 1999. The course had one of the highest enrollments of all postgraduate level courses at ASPEN. Posters on the effect of eggs on lipids and fatty acids, care report of monitoring one patient with abnormal lipids and a response to a high PUFA diet.
What should you eat today?ä Suggestions for foods to eat... and foods to avoid.
Late 1999:
Our view on the ideal diet. Read about the controversies of which diet to
choose: one low in fat and high in carbohydrates; one very low in fat (less
than 10% of calories as fat); one high in protein; one with specific ratios of
carbohydrates to protein to fat.
1999: A
revolutionary approach to treat patients with low HDL and high TGs who are
likely to die of premature heart disease. Dyslipidemia. Also treatments
for hypertension, IBD, asthma. The relationship between evolution, diet, and
