Delay Aging

When does life begin and end? Life does not begin or end. It is transferred from one organism to another. Each cell contains life. To live long and well, we must optimize the function of each cell.

Ideas and Commentary

We present new diagnostic and treatment approaches based on biochemical nutrition. Our approach diagnoses biochemical abnormalities and suggests therapies to correct or bypass them. Using global models of physiological processes, we present strategies to prevent or treat cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune disorders, and infectious diseases.

Optimization Principles. How to optimize body function.

Essential Fats are the key to both beauty and brains!

Comments, discussion, and review of popular books and articles such as the Zone, the Omega Plan, other popular diets.

Do you wish to reverse or slow down your aging?

 Jokes and anecdotes

Memorable phrases. Send us fallacies, misleading advertising, scientifically sounding words that make no sense (include copy of ad).

Announcements

Many people have been asking about revisions of Dr. Siguel's popular book, "Essential Fatty Acids in Health and Disease." We are in the process of writing two new books which we hope to published by the end of 1999. Watch this website for updates and special offers! Coming soon:

Eat to Live Long and Well: Master the Essential Fats. (~ 800+ p.) This is an extensive expansion and update of our popular book. Similar chapters but greatly expanded. New sections on neurological disorders, treatment of abnormal lipids (drugs + nutrition), nutrition supplements in chronic disease, blood testing, food preparation, etc. Detailed guidelines for diagnosis, treatment using EFs. The most comprehensive review of issues relating to EFs available. Contains detailed sections on common health conditions. Extensive critical review of articles about EFs and antioxidants. New diagnostic and treatment approaches for cardiovascular disease, Crohn's disease, severe abnormal lipids, dyslipidemia, premature heart disease, herpes, AIDS, Cystic Fibrosis, and many more. Nutrition guidelines for pregnancy, healthy babies and children. Professionals interested in writing a section, please contact us. Targeted to health professionals, nutritionists, doctors, patients. Optimization Principles

Optimal body function depends on optimal cell function. Optimal cell function depends on optimal membrane function.

The body is made of cells. Cells produce new chemicals for the body, break down and eliminate chemicals not needed by the body, and create energy to sustain body functions. Cells create hormones that regulate other cells. Cells create chemicals that destroy cancer cells, viruses, bacteria, other infectious organisms, and toxic chemicals.

Cells group to form organs with specialized functions. The organs are located in "compartments," parts of the body with specialized functions. Cells also have internal compartments with specialized functions.

Cancer cells are cells that have mutated (changed) and CANNOT stop reproducing. The body detects abnormal cells and starts a process of self-destruction called apoptosis.

The "skin" of each cell is called a cell membrane. The membrane is a gatekeeper that lets raw materials and fuel enter the cell, and finished products or waste to exit the cell. For the cell to work optimally, the membrane must allow the right type and amount of substances inside the cell and let the right substances back out of the cell.

Cell membranes contain some SFAs, MUFAs, PUFAs, proteins, and sugars as part of complex substances such as phospholipids and receptors.

Different fatty acids pack together differently. The more "saturated" fatty acids are straighter and pack together more tightly, making a more solid substance. The more "unsaturated" varieties have kinks or bends, meaning they cannot pack together as tightly and make a more fluid substance.

Optimal cell membranes have a specific "fluidity" that allows them to change structure and let substances in and out. Proper fluidity also allows receptors to work at their best. Cell membranes composed of many PUFAs can quickly deform or change and allow the cell to respond to stimuli more effectively. In contrast, cell membranes composed of many SFAs or TFAs are "hard" and cannot deform as well, leading to suboptimal responses and premature diseases and aging. Suboptimal cells may work poorly or against the body (they may help invaders survive or may attack healthy cells).

By providing your body with the w3 and w6 PUFAs it needs to make healthy cell membranes, you are optimizing the function of each cell and thus of your entire body.

Memorable phrases

At a recent alternative medicine conference, I saw some people promoting "organized water." I asked about it and learned that many people have their body water disorganized, with some electrons randomly distributed (some people even lose electrons)!

Organized water may organize your electrons. If you think some of your electrons are randomly wandering across their orbits, beware of the water you drink. Organize it first! (Maybe water particles should join a labor union?).

Actually, water is always "disorganized:" it is composed of hydrogen and oxygen ions which are constantly changing "partners" and creating new bonds. Electrons are always floating around, and some always get "lost" to the environment.

This "disorganization" gives water unique qualities that led to life on this planet. For example, water has a unique property that it becomes less dense when it freezes. This is why ice cubes float in water (most substances become more dense and sink). Because of this, water at the surface of a lake will freeze while the bottom of the lake remains relatively warm-- allowing animals to survive long, cold winters. If the ice sank after it froze, the lake would become solid ice and most animals would die.

Moral: beware of people selling strange things which they claim are an improvement on nature. Good old mother nature usually knows best.

Jokes and anecdotes

[You must have a better nutrition joke than the ones below! Please send it to us! Email coolfoods@hotmail.com, write JOKE in subject, and state whether you would like to be quoted]

Do not blame the dinner... blame the diner!

The family that eats together, grows together (new proof of nature vs. nurture, genes vs. environment).

If you need to get off the phone or leave a pesky telemarketer, say: "Sorry, we have important things to eat." (If you are late, you can say: "Sorry, I had important things to eat.")

A man waked into his doctor's office with a piece of pizza stuck in one ear, a pastry in his nose, and a quart of ice cream coming out of his belly button. "What's wrong with me?" he asked in desperation.
The doctor examined him carefully and then announced, "You're not eating properly."

Why don’t cannibals eat clowns? Because they taste funny.
